Second Grade Responsibilities and Expectations:
Now that we are entering the second half of Grade 2, please help your child take ownership of their personal materials and responsibilities which include: bringing and turning in Take Home folders, taking home and practicing “Just Right” books, and keeping a nightly log of reading. Students can grab a fresh log in the classroom if they need another. We expect that all second grade students are reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each night.
Lexia Practice:
While students login and practice Lexia in class, we recommend that students practice a total of 60-80 minutes per week. Please ask your second grader to do Lexia practice at home at least twice a week to supplement their in-class sessions.
This Week in Second Grade:
What an exciting week we’ve had in the Ivy Nook! Our Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge success. In addition to our City Hall visit, the students were able to write letters thanking troops who are serving overseas, and also help bag bulk beans and rice for a local food bank. Stevenson School definitely made an impact on our community! We were also proud of our Pirates during our field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We were lucky to have time in the Discovery Lab to observe many of the species we’ve been studying in the classroom. Thanks to all the parents who were able to join us on both our walk to City Hall and to our visit at the Aquarium! Check out the picture in our photo gallery.
Reading/Writing/Spelling:
• Reading Workshop/Independent Reading: practice reading independently at "just right" level. Teacher/student conferencing about reading; fluency checks and comprehension book talks
• Literature Circle: Completing "Phokey" (The Adventures of Phokey the Sea Otter). Ask your second grader about Phokey’s travels; Vocabulary: vulnerable, compass, hurtling, crevice, waterlogged, clutching, retreating, eluding, glistening, gleamed, & cathedral
• Thank You letters to Troops
• Writing Workshop: Fairy tale genre – Drafting our stories using our writing plan. Weaving in the elements of traditional fairy tales (special beginning, royalty, 3’s 7’s 12’s, love, wishes coming true, good vs. evil, magic, happy ending)
• Read Aloud: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Martin’s Big Words
• Fundations: Letter sound drills, tapping out words to encode, digraphs, blends; building words on magnetic letter boards; closed syllable type and how to "mark" this syllable type; Dictation writing: sounds, words, and sentences
• Browsing Box – Otters galore, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Civil Rights books; fairy tales
Literature Discussion With Mrs. Peiken:
• Bravery Literature Packet: Jack and the Beanstalk
• Next week, students should finish reading or reread Jack and the Beanstalk (focusing on what is interesting/surprising about the story) as they will dive further in to their discussion next week. They had so many thoughts and ideas about this story that Mrs. Peiken said, "This has been the best discussion our group has ever had!"
