In summary, here is what we have been working on in Grade 2:
Reading/Writing/Spelling
- Reading Workshop/Independent Reading- Habits of good readers: setting goals, reading with stamina, practicing to STOP and THINK; reading and choosing "just right" books; comprehension and fluency check-ins; keeping a reading journal and log
- Writing Workshop: The 7 elements of a fairy tale ("Once upon a time", Royalty, 3's, 7's, 12's, Good vs. Evil, Magic, Wishes Come True, Happy Ending); using checklists to find these elements in various fairy tales
- Envisioning, planning, and writing our own fairy tales
- Reading Fairy Tales: compare and contrast various Cinderella stories from around the world and why authors may choose to write "fractured" or different versions of a familiar fairy tale (to see the story from a different perspective, to change the way the story ends, to write about what happened before the story took place, or to predict what would come next...)
- Lexia: Computer program practice and pencil/paper skill builder practice
- Fundations: reviewing closed syllable types and practicing closed exception syllable type words; tapping out sounds; marking words
