This week we launched Fundations Level 2 in our classroom. This program provides a systematic approach to teaching reading and spelling with phonics. We will combine this instruction with our on-going reading and writing instruction. Please review the information handout which was sent home in your child's folder. - Reading Workshop/Independent Reading: practice reading independently at "just right" level. Teacher/student conferencing about reading; fluency checks and comprehension book talks
- Literature Circle: "Phokey" (The Adventures of Phokey the Sea Otter); vocabulary: instincts, pandemonium, isthmus, extinction, flourish, commotion, poach, glum, evasive
- Friendly Letter Writing to Super Star
- Writing Workshop: Fairy tale genre - brainstorm elements of a fairy tale; plan and begin to draft fairy tale
- Read Aloud: Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, Egyptian Cinderella, Korean Cinderella, Yeh Shen -A Chinese Cinderella Story (Cinderella stories from around the world)
- Fundations: Introduction to program and routines; review of letters, sounds, digraphs, blends; building words on magnetic letter boards; introduction to closed syllable type and how to "mark" this syllable type; Word of the Day: rich, shred

- Lexia (*Though students do login into and practice Lexia each week in class, we recommend that students practice 60 -80 minutes a week. Please ask your second grader to do Lexia practice at home at least twice a week.)

- Tool of the Week: "Taking Time" tool: I use time wisely – Time-in and time-away. Understanding that we can make choices about how we use time is empowering. Pushing the pause button and taking time–away to breath renews our strength and resolve. Taking time–in to reflect leads to better self–understanding and more empathy for others.
