Upcoming dates to note:
Second Grade Responsibilities and Expectations:
Thanks for your support in shifting the nightly responsibilities to our capable grade 2 students! They are doing a much better job bringing folders, books, and reading logs back and forth each day. We expect that all second grade students are reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Lexia and reading aloud to your child should not be a substitute for their independent reading practice!
Lexia Practice:
While students login and practice Lexia in class, we recommend that students practice a total of 60-80 minutes per week. As a reminder, students should not be on Lexia for more than 20-30 minutes per day for both year-long pacing and minimizing screen time.
Reading/Writing/Spelling:
• Reading Workshop/Independent Reading: practice reading independently at "just right" level, with an emphasis on building stamina, journaling, and completion of books. Teacher/student conferencing about reading; fluency checks and comprehension book talks
• Birthday & Superstar letters
• Writing Workshop: Fairy tale genre – Drafting, editing, and publishing our stories. Other words for “said” and how to use dialogue effectively in helping to tell story and develop characters
• Read Aloud: Prince Cinders, 2030 A Day in the Life of Tomorrow's Kids, Light in the Darkness
• Fundations: Letter sound drills, tapping out words to encode, digraphs, blends; building words on magnetic letter boards; practicing rule for "bonus letters"- f, l, s; closed syllable type and how to "mark" this syllable type; Dictation writing: sounds, words, and sentences
• Browsing Box: Rocks, Presidents, and Black History to compliment new units of study in Science and History
• Book talks: Several new additions to the class library. Special thanks to the Moms who have been helping to organize and level our books!
